Eddie Posting For Dat
Hey guys. I've noticed lots of negativity so I'm banning anon posts and people who are argumentative on this journal.

Dat Phan just wants to interact with his fans. He doesn't want a flame war, so please report any offensive material to me at eddie@datphan.com with an appropriate link and I will ban that user.

Thanks
-Eddie

No, not to my knowledge. His first TV appearance was Good Morning Miami, one of the prizes from Last Comic Standing. He has never shot anything for Comedy Central... yet.

He's not banning dissent. Don't get your knickers all twisted. What he's doing is banning anonymous posts. Now, if you want to post, you need to get a LJ and sign your "name".

As for banning negative posters, I'm guessing he's not banning anyone who might disagree with Dat, but those who are unneccesarily rude. Life's too short to put up with people who cannot make their points without being rude and insulting.

Obviously you didn't read the comments in question...

(Link)
It's all well and good to wave a copy of the constitution and scream "First Amendment! FIRST AMENDMENT!" but it's important to remember that this is a personal LiveJournal, not a public forum.
If some butthead/buttheads were posting rude, obscenity riddled, racist, illiterate, derogatory or otherwise incendiary remarks in my LJ, you can bet I would get rid of them without batting an eye. There is a huge difference between polite dissent and being a flaming dickhole. Besides, the detractors were not merely saying they didn't like Dat or his comedy, they were making personal attacks on other posters in the journal as well. Somehow, I think that the badly spelled insults of a handful of geeks won't keep Dat up at night, but the idea that his fans are being harrassed in his own LJ just might. But you probably didn't consider that angle.
Obviously you make your statement without having read all of the previous comments. If you had, you would see that there were plenty of people brave and intelligent enough to give actual intelligent criticism, some of which Dat THANKED them for. These are not the people that were banned.

Re: Obviously you didn't read the comments in question...

(Link)
I think you're missing my point. I'm not running around with constitution in my hand screaming "FIRST AMMENDMENT!", People have every right to censor what people write in their comments.

However, what Eddie is saying is, more or less, that he will only accept your comments if you are praising Dat.

Are there any laws against that? Certainly Not. Is it a jerk move? Completely.

Slow down and read before you write...

(Link)
"I'm banning anon posts and people who are argumentative on this journal."

That is not the same as banning any posts that are not praising Dat. It's important to read and attempt to comprehend what is written within the context before making any comments in response, particularly snarky sarcastic ones. If you don't, it just makes people think you don't know what you're talking about. Unfortunately, this advice comes too late for you in this particular instance.

Posters were insulting the looks, intelligence and racial identities of Dat's fans, in addition to clogging the journal with so many comments it was impossible for actual fans to communicate. (I myself was referred to as a fat midwestern housewife. As I am a young woman living sinfully in a hip, well-to-do resort city, I was not fazed. However there were other, more cruel and vile insults directed at other posters, any of whom would be completely justified in reporting the harrassment) As much as it may bother flamers that they are no longer able to do this anymore, the move to ban them is neither unfair, unwarranted, unexpected or "a jerk move." Disruptive posters do not have any inherent right to insult people just because it provides them with the validation they so desperately need. You are still free to post comments that are not rude or threatening, even if they are not praising Dat. You would have realized that if you had paid closer attention to Eddie's original post.
In all reality, comments such as yours are not the real problem here. The brunt of the issue is a tiny handful of posters typing unfounded and ridiculous slurs against strangers. This is why I am responding to you in earnest, rather than being utterly condescending or ignoring you.

If all comments that were not praising Dat were banned, I would be extraordinarily angry. But that is not what is happening. The people who will be banned are people that the fans perceive as threatening or offensive. "Dat Phan sucks" does not fall into this catagory; "Dat only won because you gooks wanted him to win and you're stupid and ugly and all you minorities stick together and this isn't just about Dat, this is about how people in the midwest and Cali don't know what comedy is" does. There is a distinct difference.

Re: Slow down and read before you write...

Congratulations on selectively interpreting what was said. If you look at the whole sentance you can see what was really meant:

"I've noticed lots of negativity so I'm banning anon posts and people who are argumentative on this journal."

It's a simple cause-and-effect.

"I've noticed lots of negativity" therefore "I'm banning anon posts and people who are argumentative on this journal" in order to decrease negativity [and actively promote positivity].

Reading comprehension is not all you need in this life. Analysis is also necessary.

Weep for those who wish to b*tch, for they have been robbed of their inalienable rights...

(Link)
And therefore deprive the actual fans of the opportunity to interact with Dat and each other? Why should the majority suffer to please the sensibilities of the reviled and repulsive dissenters? Why should innocent people be insulted because a handful of idiots want to get their rocks off by hurling racial slurs? Beyond that, what is the great evil behind promoting a postive atmosphere? The people here are tired of being bitched at, and if they want to minimize negativity, what gives you the leverage to complain in the first place? Your LJ is not being censored, and you have been civil enough up to this point to avoid being lumped in with the abusive j*ck-offs who've been banned. If your (or anyone else's) desire for divisive arguing is so very great, I suggest you visit www.fansofrealitytv.com, or one of dozens of similar sites, to connect with people who are still fighting over every aspect of LCS.

Negativity has not been banned. Those who wish to post insults anonymously, and those who are simply here to disparage Dat and his fans have been. I for one am relieved. This is a Live Journal, not a POE forum and not a message board. No one is owed the opportunity to post here, least of all those who's only desire is to abuse those who comment legitimately.

Please calm down.

I got this under control. I understand you're trying to help, but if you start another flame war, I will ban you and the person you are arguing with. I think he got the point.. and if he didn't, he will never get your point--just the way things go. We have to move on and look forward. There will always be negativity and criticism.

Thank you

Dat, I want you to know that I was pulling for you from your first set. Your act's unique, and every occurance in the house just convinced me more that you were meant to be the last comic standing. I voted for you twelve times. I think you should develop ideas for your act about growing up in California and I can't wait for your next project. I was really excited about this LJ and thought it would be a great place to interact with you on a one-on-one basis. I'm out like trout.

Re: Slow down and read before you write...

(Link)
I am sensoring comments that are extremely negative. If you started commenting on every one of the fans' comments and trying to press your views onto them, that itself will create a flame war--which 3 users and anonymous posters had done.

You calling me a jerk or calling Dat a hack doesn't matter to me. As long as you aren't completely a dick about it and screaming with our fans, you do have your own right to say certain things. But I will ban people as I see fit if they are creating more negativity and giving Dat 400 emails he doesn't need by fans defending him or arguing with person who hate them. I define that as negativity and unproductive to our cause: to reach out and talk to the fans.

We do like to hear what the fans are doing and if they have positive comments, it's always nice to get a "thank you" or words of support.

If you got a lot of negative comments (most from 3 users), I think you'd ban them as well.

Thank you for your comments.

Re: Slow down and read before you write...

(Link)
Let me first start off by saying that I know exactly how you feel, I run a messageboard patronized by almost my entire school, positive and negative comments come and go all day. Having said that, I think it is a bad idea to influence what people say (either by banning or threatning to ban them) because you no longer get the true feelings of your fans (what this, I assume is set up to do) but rather a watered-down, shadow of what the fans (or critics) have to say, completely defeating the purpose. (Beyond that, you become legally liable for everything said in these comments once you start censoring them -- but thats a seprate issue)

Whatever, I dont even know where I was going with this, so I'll just cut it here.

(p.s. I don't think youre a jerk,I barely know you, Its just a negligable move on your part. As for Dat, I still think he's a hack until he proves me otherwise)

Dat and Eddie will still read all the comments in order to weed out the idiots, so they will read both sides, however that doesn't mean that we, the Dat fans, want to read them.

This journal is for Fans only, not for people who spread hate, racism and prejudice.

That is true. I will consider your words. I may ban all comments soon, but for now, things look good and I am happy. Dat is pretty happy with Live Journal (he just found it so he's still in awe of all its powers). I hope the 1/2 hour comedy central special changes your mind about Dat. We're working on a lot of new material.. without his mom.

The big problem with web-boards is that they aren't usenet where subscribers can freeze out the garbage-posters with killfiles. When the majority of posters can't "see" the junk posts, the junk poster gets zero attention and leaves.

Since we don't have KFs of our own, it's good there's a moderator here to do the job for us.

~~~"and giving Dat 400 emails he doesn't need by fans defending him or arguing with person who hate them."~~~
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
When the flame wars started I seemed to have been targeted by one of the key players in the beginning... comments were made to me that were way out of line, I'm not easily offended, but the stuff being said was messed up! (funny thing was, some of those comments made about me were things my little brother and I use to use to ag each other on when we younger...) lol, anyway, I ended up deleting my original comments and then stopped reacting to the jerks who were flying off of the handle... I felt bad about deleting posts in another persons journal, but didn't feel like being associated with the negativity... I am sorry that Dat got inundated with all of that crap in his in-box *comforts*
Thank you for moderating the negativity out of the journal, while it's not something that's a big deal, something about those posters and their comments really made me feel tense sometimes! Anyway, thank you Eddie and Dat!
